History of Mt. Zion Lodge No. 10
In the year 1951, a group of young, spiritual-minded men united as Christian brothers, to form a new subordinate lodge to work under the MOST WORSHIPFUL HIRAM GRAND LODGE, A.F. & A.M. The group appeared before the Grand Master, Hon. Clarence Wycoff, 33° to ask permission for recognition as a regular lodge in the Hiram Grand Organization. Their charter was granted and they set aside to work, right and regular, as Mt. Zion Lodge #10 under their first Worshipful Master Bro. Jerome Hall, who served for two years (1951-1953).
In November 1961 under the administration of Worshipful Master James H. Alston, an Eastern Star chapter was established working under the Naomi Grand Chapter, Order of the Eastern Star. They were given the name Mt. Zion Star Chapter #16. During Worshipful Master Frank M. Johnson's administration, a scholarship fund was established, to help a needy student attend college. Under Worshipful Master Leroy Wilkins' administration, a Life membership in the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People was started; in addition, the "Man of the Year" award was initiated during his term. Following Leroy Wilkins was Columbus Goode, who started the Mt. Zion "Family Day, which was celebrated each year at Patapsco State Park for many years. During Worshipful Master Winston J. Hall's tenure, the Lodge awarded two $1000 scholarships to two deserving students. Succeeding Bro. Hall was Worshipful Master Harmon Bobbitt. Under his guidance, a Testimonial Banquet was given in October 1980 to honor then Grand Master John V. Thornton.
Through the years, this lodge has been instrumental in aiding and contributing to numerous churches as well as to civic and charitable organizations. Brothers of Mt. Zion Lodge #10 have progressed and overcome many obstacles and have always stressed and practiced betterment for all mankind.God has been our greatest leader and we will continue to follow his instruction for each new day and each New Year for greater success both spiritually and financially.
