History
On August 25, 1944, the Most Excellent General Grand Royal Chapter of Royal Arch Masonry of the United States of America and Canada convoking in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania did organize, establish and regularly constitute the Grand Royal Arch Chapter of Royal Arch Masonry for the Jurisdiction State of Maryland. The newly constituted Chapter is to be known and registered as the Mt. Moriah Chapter No. 1 and was entrusted to our beloved Companion John H.
Thornton, Excellent High Priest, Daniel Perry, King and Irving Fleming, Scribe. The Chapter was empowered to open and hold, under the jurisdiction of said Chapter, Lodges and confer the Chapter Degrees and Exalt candidates to the August Degree of the Holy Royal Arch according to the ancient landmarks and usage’s of Royal Arch Masonry. The original Charter was signed by the beloved “Companions Lance Richardson, Most Excellent General Grand High Priest,
John W. Bell, Deputy General Grand High Priest, O.C. Williams, General Grand King, Floyd Clark, General Grand Scribe and Z. A. Crawford General Grand
Secretary.
Companion John H. Thornton, served as the first Most Excellent High Priest of Mt. Moriah Chapter No. 1 from 1944 to 1959. During his administration, he put into operation several innovative programs such as the “Father/Son Banquet”, “Inspirational Breakfast” and the “Art Show” to name a few. The programs except for the “Art Show” have become annual tradition for the Companions over the years with the succession of each newly Excellent High Priest. Since the Chapter was
constituted, twelve (12) Companions have been elected to the office of Excellent High Priest. The Companions are John H. Thornton 1944 to 1959; James L. Mosley 1959 to 1962; Jessie Jackson 1962 to 1967; James A. Yarbro 1967 to 1977; Horace L. Love Sr. 1977 to 1984; Andrew Chesson 1984 to 1988; Lamar Smith Sr. 1988 to 1994; Moses Gardner 1994 to 1998; Alvin Truesdale 1998 to 2005; Robert Haden 2005 to 2006; Henry McKnight 2006 to 2007; Le’Roy Smith-Bey 2007 to 2010; Carl Anderson 2010 to present.
