History of James L. Nichols Lodge No. 30
James L. Nichols Lodge No. 30 is named in the honor of Rev. James L. Nichols. Rev. Nichols began his Masonic education in 1928. He became the first Grand Lecturer of the Most Worshipful Hiram Grand Lodge in 1938 and also served in many other positions within the Grand Lodge, including Grand Chaplain.
In June 1975, Rev. James L. Nichols, Past Grand Lecturer and Past Grand Chaplain of the Most Worshipful Hiram Grand Lodge A.F. & A.M. let it be known that he would like to have a lodge to be named in his honor. His request was taken under consideration by the Grand Master, the Honorable John V. Thornton. Brother James H. Alston, Past Master of Mt. Zion Lodge No. 10 A.F. & A.M. was informed of Rev. James L. Nichols request and was asked to constitute a new lodge.
In August 1975, Brother Alston and eighteen other brothers assembled in the auditorium of the Hiram Grand Lodge. Grand Master Thornton presided over the meeting. The opening hymn was "What a Friend We Have in Jesus", followed by a prayer offered by Rev. James L. Nichols. Remarks were given by all present. Rev. Nichols gave God's blessings and the Honorable John V. Thornton issued a warrant of charter. The group of men then assembled and became known as James L. Nichols Lodge No. 30 A.F. & A.M. The Lodge agreed to meet on the second and fourth Wednesday of every month.
On March 1, 1976, James L. Nichols Lodge No. 30 made a request of the Most Worshipful Hiram Grand Lodge to be consecrated and set aside as a regular lodge.
On Sunday, April 4, 1976, James L. Nichols Lodge No. 30 assembled at 3925 Dolfield Avenue, Baltimore, MD 21215, Sweet Hope Freewill Baptist Church where Rev. John Crumbly was the pastor. In attendance were the Honorable John V. Thornton, Grand Master and his Grand Lodge staff. Also in attendance were Sister Helen V. Benton, Grand Matron of Naomi Grand Chapter and her Grand Chapter staff. Brother Alston yielded the gavel to the Honorable John V. Thornton. After hymns, prayers and a brief ceremony, James L. Nichols Lodge No. 30 was consecrated. The dream of Rev. James L. Nichols, Honorable Past Grand Lecturer and Past Grand Chaplain of the Most Worshipful Hiram Grand Lodge, finally became a reality.
